Holy Week – April 14

4:14 viaTriumphal Entries: Who Wins?
by Connie Takamine

Focus Scripture: The crowds that went ahead of Jesus and that followed were shouting,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Matthew 21:9

~ A poem by Connie Takamine based on The Last Week by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan

Loud Hosannas rang
The crowd claimed
Jesus Christ as King.

On Jerusalem’s other side
Clip clop clip clop
The militia marches in.

Two triumphal entries
Moral versus military
Who in the end would win?

Jesus gave up his life
To protest power without justice
To condemn the rich who lack concern for the poor.

Jesus gave up his life
That others do the same.

Who do you think has won?

Lenten Practice: Reflect on these words by Trevor Hudson: “Following Jesus means moving out of our privatized, isolated and self-enclosed worlds into a compassionate engagement with our suffering neighbor.”

Lenten Prayer: O God, your amazing grace carries, lifts and holds us in all seasons. You bring us hope. You lead us to joy. You teach us to sing. Amen.
