With Love from Pat
Friday, August 5, 2016
It was a wonderful time away for me in July visiting with family and fossil hunting here and there in Colorado and Utah. There was genuine delight in having days that were uncluttered, unstructured and unhurried. These were the kind of days that simply invited me to embrace the gift of precious relationships, and the majesty and mystery of God’s creation.
And it is good to be back home with my church family and to continue our ministry together as our beloved church reaches out in mission in so many ways. We are important to each other and to our community. Our compassion and our commitment are alive, vital and growing. We are expanding the ways we care. Our hearts are opening wider and wider so that God’s love can flow through us, transforming our way of being in the world and building communities that are safer, saner and more decent for all. We are helping to create places and spaces where all are valued as beloved children of God. This is a faithful and lovely way to live. Thank you.
A couple other notes:
I was moved beyond words and deeply grateful for the election of the Rev. Dr. Karen Oliveto as Bishop in the United Methodist Church. And I was overjoyed that Bishop Karen was assigned to our conference beginning September 1st. I have invited our new Bishop to preach at our church. Bishop Karen will get many invitations, and it will take her a while to figure out her schedule. I will keep you posted.
In the meantime, please mark your calendars for Bishop Karen’s installation service: Saturday, September 24, at 3 pm at Arvada United Methodist Church. Let’s all plan on going together.
And the Rev. Dr. Celene Lillie is now in Boulder as the Director of the Tanho Center for a new New Testament. Welcome Celene! About half of Celene’s work time will be spent working directly with our church’s Adult Education and worship ministries.
We made a commitment to raise $20,000 to help underwrite Celene’s first year compensation. We are about ¾ of the way there. You can help us meet our commitment today by following this link (select “other,” and type in “Celene Lillie Support” and your desired contribution amount) or you can write a check made payable to FUMC and mark it “Celene Lillie Support.” Please help us complete our commitment this week. You can email me if you have questions: patrickrbruns at gmail dot com.
Also, I spent last Wednesday morning working with this year’s Youth Summer Mission Trip. Our youth are doing important work repairing our Mountain Haven house, cleaning up trash from Boulder Canyon streams, and assisting the Gilpin County Food Pantry whose resources have been stretched by this summer’s fire in Nederland. Thanks to all our youth who are making such a practical difference, and to Youth Coordinator Heidi Lewis, Cheryl Bort, and Rich & Fran Saxon, who are have worked side-by-side with our youth this week.
During worship on August 14th our youth will give a presentation about their mission week. You won’t want to miss that.
As always, there is so much going on in our vibrant church community, and in our world. Please keep our beloved church in your prayers; I remember you in mine. See you soon.
