A Letter from Our Staff Parish Relations Committee:
The Rev. Matthias Krier Appointed as Our New Pastor
A week and a half ago, our Staff Parish Relations (SPR) Committee received word from our District Superintendent, Skip Strickland, that the Bishop and the Cabinet had identified a person who they believed to be such an excellent fit for this church that they wanted him to start right away. Along with Skip, SPR met with this candidate, the Rev. Matthias Krier, on November 21 to ask questions, and to determine whether or not he would be a good match for this congregation. After much conversation with Matthias, all of the members of SPR wholeheartedly and enthusiastically affirm this appointment.
Matthias (Matt) will begin at First United Methodist Church of Boulder on January 1, 2017. His first Sunday leading worship will be January 8th. What an amazing way to begin the new year! Rev. Dale Beck, our Interim Senior Pastor, will be with us through December 31, 2016.Matthias “Matt” Krier was raised on a farm in South Dakota, graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University, and married his high school sweetheart, Della when they were just 20 years old. They have two adult children and three grandchildren – all of whom live in the Denver metro area. Matt and Della currently live in Longmont.
After college, he worked for four years as a residential counselor at a group home for girls. He then attended Iliff School of Theology, where he received his Master of Divinity. During that time he participated in a nine-day intensive training under Father Thomas Keating, which he says changed his life. For five years, Matt served as Associate Pastor at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, where he was responsible for preaching, pastoral care, overseeing the youth and confirmation programs, and spiritual formation. He graduated from the Two Year Academy for Spiritual Formation in Madison, Wisconsin, and since then has served churches in South Dakota, Alaska, Niwot, Steamboat Springs, and most currently at Trinity United Methodist Church in Loveland.
The members of SPR found Matt to be a warm, balanced, and genuine person. He has a strong spiritual core as well as a very practical approach to ministry. He also has a heart for issues of peace with justice, and experience working with individuals who are homeless. In addition, he is a strong advocate for the LGBTQ community, and is excited about both our work with the Tanho Center and with Attention Homes, including the proposed Attention Homes housing project.
SPR wants to acknowledge that this has been a challenging year for our congregation. But we also want to assure you that we are so very blessed to have Matt coming to First Church to share in ministry with us.
If you have any questions, please email Joan Schmitt, Chair of the SPR Committee: kjschmitt at comcast dot net.
Blessings to you and your dear ones this Advent season!
