You’ll want to make sure you’re in church on Sunday, May 21, and you may want to bring a friend or 5! Our Chancel Choir and Friends, guest orchestra, and organ, under the baton of Director of Music Gerald Holbrook, will present Anton Bruckner’s beautiful Te Deum during our 10:30 am worship service. No tickets are required, and there is no admission charge. Absolutely everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy this musical masterpiece.
Anton Bruckner (1842-1896), Austrian composer and organist, wrote symphonies, masses, motets and other sacred choral works, and some chamber music. While he was a renowned organist, his compositions were not widely accepted until he was in his 60’s. The Te Deum was begun in 1881, and completed in 1884. The work was dedicated “Ad majorem Dei gloriam” (to the greater glory of God). It was premiered in Vienna on May 2, 1885. The work is in 5 sections, written for chorus, orchestra, and four soloists, with emphasis on the tenor soloist.
The text of the Te Deum is a Latin hymn traditionally sung on occasions for public rejoicing. It is attributed to Nicetas, the bishop of Remesiana from the early 5th century. Unlike most hymns, it is prose, containing traditional statements of belief.
Gerald W. Holbrook holds a Doctoral degree in organ performance from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Masters degree in piano performance from Roosevelt University in Chicago. With over 30 years experience in choral music he also has an interest in Gregorian chant, gives workshops around the country in this ancient genre, and has three recordings to his credit. As a composer, he focuses on sacred music, particularly choral and organ works, some of which have been performed by San Francisco’s noted Schola Cantorum as well as by church choirs around the country. Dr. Holbrook is currently the Director of Music at First United Methodist Church in Boulder, and the Chorus Master and Director of Educational Outreach for Opera Fort Collins.
Once or twice a year, Director of Music Gerald Holbrook expands the Chancel Choir (which performs weekly in our worship services) to include singer friends of FUMC to perform a larger work. We look forward to welcoming our “Friends” of the Chancel Choir from our community back each year to perform choral masterworks with us.
