Theologian and Author Hal Taussig Returns: FREE Public Lecture Tuesday, 4/25, 7 PM
April 23, 2017 @ 9:00 am - April 30, 2017 @ 12:00 pm
We are excited to welcome Dr. Hal Taussig back to First United Methodist Church of Boulder! Dr. Taussig is a Theologian-in-Residence here at FUMC, and is also a Co-Founder of the Tanho Center for a new New Testament, a partner organization of our church that is in residence in our building.
Dr. Taussig will give a free public lecture entitled “Experiencing God on New Terms” in our church parlor on Tuesday, April 25, at 7:00 pm. He will explore material from the new book he is currently writing, provisionally called Encounters with a Vulnerable God: New 21st Century Lessons from Recently Unearthed Ancient Texts. Dr. Taussig’s talk will focus both on how to think clearly about the divine in the 21st century, and how to continue learning new things from the Bible and the expanding family of ancient texts to which it belongs. He’ll touch on the failures of the western concept of a divine figure that is both “almighty” and “all loving,” and will also lead two spiritual exercises in encountering a vulnerable god.
Dr. Taussig will also preach at our 10:30 am worship services on Sunday, April 23, and Sunday, April 30. On April 23, his sermon will center around Psalm 16, and on April 30 he will explore material from The Thunder: Perfect Mind, a Fourth-century Christian text discovered in 1945. As always, absolutely everyone is invited to join us for worship services; all are welcome.
Dr. Taussig will also lead the Forum, one of our Sunday adult education programs, at 9:00 am on Sunday, April 23, in the church parlor; he will lead a conversation pondering some of the topics that he will broach in his Tuesday evening lecture on April 25. Dr. Taussig will also be the guest facilitator for Sacred Bites, our Tuesday Bible study over buy-your-own lunch, on Tuesday, April 25; the group will be in conversation around Acts 2:14, 36-41, if you want to take a look before you come (reading in advance is never required, though). Sacred Bites meets at 11:45 am at The Lazy Dog at the corner 14th and Pearl on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. We enjoy lunch (everyone buys their own) and conversation together, and usually wrap up around 1:00 pm. All are welcome!
In addition to his role with the Tanho Center, Dr. Hal Taussig is the recently retired Visiting Professor of New Testament at Union Theological Seminary in New York, an ordained United Methodist minister, and the author of 14 books including the hugely influential A New New Testament: A Bible for the Twenty-first Century Combining Traditional and Newly Discovered Texts. This is his third consecutive year spending time with the FUMC Boulder community as a Theologian in Residence (TIR), and we’re delighted that he’s returned to Boulder this April!
