Wed, 12/20: Celebrate the Winter Solstice on Our Labyrinth
December 20, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
A candlelight Winter Solstice service will be celebrated on the beautiful indoor labyrinth at First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, 12/20, at 6:30 pm. The traditions of the Christmas season have deep roots in the older, earthier celebrations of the longest night of the year. Come embrace the return of the light with this deeply spiritual, traditional celebration of the solar new year.
Rev. Barbara Middleton, Dr. Celene Lillie, and Dr. Susan Coppage Evans of the Fox Institute for Creation Spirituality will lead the service, and sound artists Joy Sylvia and Michael Heartsong will provide mystical sounds using a variety of instruments.
Walk the labyrinth with the mystical sounds of didgeridoos, handpan, flute, drum, vocal toning and more. The labyrinth and sound are both ancient tools for journeying within to connect, release and renew. The soundscapes will set the tone for a full hour, allowing time for you to relax and bathe in the healing space before and after your walk. The instruments played will provide a rich tonal spectrum to invoke ‘deep listening’ – a sense of becoming fully present and listening with the whole body.
There is no admission cost, but love donations are encouraged for our musicians. We look forward to sharing this space together!
FREE Parking for the Winter Solstice Celebration is available in our surface parking lot; enter from 15th Street between Pine and Spruce Streets.
Due to the meditative nature of this event, we kindly ask that you do not bring young children.
