Scripture: Matthew 1:18-25
For as long as I can remember, the Christmas season has always been one of my favorite times of the year. When I was just a little boy, I admit it was more about Santa Claus and the presents under the tree. As a youth, I lost the Christmas spirit and that feeling I had as a boy. That feeling of mystery and surprise was gone for many years.
It wasn’t until college that my heart opened up again to the mystery of the season of experiencing, Emmanuel, God with us, as is written in Matthew. But this time it was not about the presents under the tree, but rather, the “Presence” of God — being with us. I experienced anew the “reason for the season,” and something much more came into being that I had not felt as a child. Something stirred within me of that Presence – the Presence of God within. I finally “got it:” Christ was the Presence being born into the world, being born in me, that changed the way in which I lived and moved and had my being!
Prayer: Oh come, oh come Emmanuel, and enliven us this Christmas Day! I am so grateful for this Presence that is born in us this day! Your Presence in Christ is now born in us. This Presence is manifested in the themes of Advent: may hope, peace, joy and love transform us as we strive to be followers of Jesus. Amen.
