First United Methodist Church of Boulder

The season of Advent encompasses the four Sundays before Christmas, and is a time of both reflection and of anticipation of Jesus’s birth. On these four Sundays, we celebrate Love, Peace, Hope, and Joy. Check out our upcoming Advent and Christmas season events, and please join us as often as you can!

Sun, 12/3: 1st Sunday of Advent—Love
Come and enjoy our annual children’s Christmas pageant during our 10:30 am service! Carriers of the Light reminds us of the light Jesus brought into the world, and encourages us all to share that light with others. During coffee hour after church, kids (of all ages!) are invited to decorate Christmas cookies to take home and enjoy.

Sun, 12/10: 2nd Sunday of Advent—Peace
Our Chancel Choir and Friends and chamber orchestra, under the direction of Gerald Holbrook, present C. P. E. Bach’s beautiful Magnificat (Song of Mary) during our 10:30 am service. After worship, enjoy the United Methodist Women’s annual Holiday Bake Sale, and a fair trade market of lovely gift items from the local shop, Momentum. Also, kids (of all ages!) are invited to decorate Christmas ornaments after church.

Sun, 12/17: 3rd Sunday of Advent—Hope
We’ll continue our celebration of the season of Advent at our 10:30 am worship service! After church, kids (of all ages!) can enjoy making votive Christmas candles during coffee hour.

Wed, 12/20: Winter Solstice Celebration on the Labyrinth
6:30-8:30 pm

The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day of the year. Come embrace the return of the light with this deeply spiritual, candlelight celebration of the solar new year on our beautiful indoor labyrinth. Rev. Barbara Middleton, Dr. Celene Lillie, and Dr. Susan Coppage Evans of the Fox Institute will open the event, and sound artists Joy Sylvia and Michael Heartsong will offer mystical sounds while you walk the labyrinth. There is no admission charge, but love donations are welcome for our musicians. No young children please.

Sat, 12/20: Blue Christmas Service on the Labyrinth, 5:00 pm
The holiday season can be difficult. We are expected to be merry and bright, but our very real grief, loneliness, and disappointments do not magically disappear. Join us for this service of healing, and let the peaceful energy and candlelight of our labyrinth soothe your soul and provide a safe space for all your feelings. Dr. Celene Lillie will officiate.

Sun, 12/24: 4th Sunday of Advent—Joy
We’ll conclude our celebration of the season of Advent at our 10:30 am worship service, and celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion. Absolutely everyone is welcome at our communion table!

5:00 pm: Join us for a family service with carol singing, stories, and a birthday cake for Jesus.

7:00 pm: All are welcome at our candlelight service with carol singing and Christmas music performed by our Chancel Choir.

9:00 pm: All are welcome at our jazz Christmas Eve service with live music and carol singing. This year’s jazz combo is Ed Battle, vocals; Pete Lewis, saxophone; Clare Church, drums; Victor Mestas-Perez, piano, and Jason Malmberg, bass.

Since 1997, First United Methodist Church of Boulder has been a Reconciling Congregation of the United Methodist Church. We affirm that absolutely all of us are beloved children of God, including persons of all sexual orientations and gender identifications.
