April 9, 2016

Our young adult affordable transitional housing project has already made this quite a year for our church’s partnership with Attention Homes. Yet in addition, this is the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Attention Homes. How about that! And it all started with the vision of First United Methodist Church of Boulder.

Attention-Homes-Logo-e1429840057879To celebrate this half century of service, the 9th annual Kaleidoscope Gala-A-Go-Go and 50th Anniversary Celebration is being held at the Omni Interlocken Hotel on May 14th from 5:30 – 10 pm. I’m hoping you will join me and others from our church family in helping to buy a Champion Table at this event. Tickets are $125.00 each because this event is one of Attention Homes’ important fund-raisers.

Our beloved church will be receiving the Judge Horace Holmes Award for Community Service at the banquet. It would be wonderful to have lots of us there. Click HERE to learn more about the gala.

And here are some words from Claire Clurman, Executive Director of Attention Homes:

Attention Homes would not exist today if it weren’t for First United Methodist Church of Boulder. Created in 1966 by an adult bible study group at FUMC led by Ruth and Malcolm Correll studying social issues of the day, District Judge Horace “Bud” Holmes and Chief Juvenile Probation Officer John Hargadine inspired the group and provided strong leadership and support.

“Attention not Detention” became the motto of the organization, as it described the need for an alternate way of dealing with juveniles and youth-at-risk beyond incarceration. Paul Wilkes, a bible study member who was head of the Social Issues Committee and a journalist with the Daily Camera newspaper, suggested the name ATTENTION HOMES, and the first leased property was the former FUMC parsonage.

Throughout the years, FUMC has provided safe refuge, numerous volunteers, funders, and board members so that our mission to provide youth in crisis with life-changing resources continues to thrive. They are steadfast supporters of our work and graciously open their church home each year for our annual Sleepout for Homeless Youth fundraising event.

Today, our partnership is stronger than ever as we seek to provide housing with on-site supportive services on the same block we were founded 50 years ago. FUMC seeks to create an atmosphere of inclusiveness, acceptance and joy for those who enter their doors. Serving the Boulder community since 1859, FUMC is a sanctuary for Christian worship and a sanctuary for exploring our relationships with God and each other through learning, celebration, and action.

I hope you can be part of this celebration honoring our five decades of mission partnership with Attention Homes. Please let me know by April 26 that you will join us on May 14. Email me at patrickrbruns at gmail dot com.

I’m looking forward to this celebration and our time together. Until then, please keep our beloved church in your prayers. I remember you in mine.

With love,

Rev. Pat Bruns
