Chancel Choir and Friends present Faure’s Requiem
May 12, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am
On Sunday, May 12, during our 10:30 AM worship service, the Chancel Choir and Friends will perform Gabriel Faure’s beautiful, comforting Requiem with orchestra. FUMC’s Director of Music, Dr. Gerald Holbrook, will conduct. Twice a year, Holbrook opens our church’s Chancel Choir to community singers who’d like to join us to perform masterpieces of the choral repertoire. It is always a joy to welcome these Friends, many of whom have been singing with the Chancel Choir for these special performances for years!
Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher whose work influenced the many 20th century composers who came after him. He served as the Head of the Paris Conservatoire from 1905-1920. Fauré was prolific, writing solo piano works, chamber music, many songs for solo voice and piano, both secular and sacred choral music, orchestra pieces, and 2 operas over the course of his long life.
Fauré’s Requiem in D minor, Op. 48, the best-known of his large-scale compositions, was first performed in 1888. The composer stated that his “Requiem wasn’t written for anything–for pleasure, if I may call it that!” Fauré revised the Requiem over the years, from the earliest versions for smaller numbers of performers to the final, seven-movement scoring for mixed chorus, full orchestra, organ, and soprano and baritone soloists, which he completed in 1900. Fauré wrote of the work, “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”
There is no admission charge to attend the Chancel Choir and Friends’ performance of Faure’s Requiem; simply come to our 10:30 AM worship service on Sunday, May 12. And please invite your friends and family! As May 12 is also Mother’s Day, perhaps there is a special mother who you would like to invite so that she may be celebrated with this beautiful music!
