Join Us for Holy Week and Easter Sunday, April 16
April 9, 2017 @ 9:00 am - April 16, 2017 @ 12:00 pm
Holy Week is April 9-15, and Easter Sunday is April 16!
The season of Lent culminates in Holy Week, and the joy of Easter morning! Please mark your calendars now, and journey with us from Palm Sunday to Easter. Absolutely EVERYONE is welcome!
April 9: Palm Sunday
Theologian-in-Residence (TIR) and best-selling author, Dr. Elaine Pagels, will lead our Adult Forum program in the church parlor. The focus of her Forum presentation will be Christianity’s Secret Gospels. This short and personal forum explores secret gospels discovered in Egypt in 1945, and the different ways they tell the story of Jesus, and what one of them calls “the true gospel (good news).” The Forum is free and open to all.
ALSO ON PALM SUNDAY: The Pine Street Parade will start around 10:00 am along Pine Street, and includes a live donkey! At 10:30 am, come inside for the Palm Sunday worship service in our sanctuary.
Tuesday, April 11, 7:00 pm: TIR Elaine Pagels will present a FREE public lecture at FUMC: “What’s Satan Got to Do With It?: A Hidden Side of the Passion Story.” No tickets or advance registration is required; a freewill offering will be collected to support FUMC’s TIR (theologian-in-residence) program.
Thursday, April 13, 7:00 pm: Ecumenical Maundy Thursday service at St. John’s Episcopal Church (across the street from FUMC). Rev. Matthias Krier or Dr. Celene Lillie will be participating in this service to represent FUMC. All are welcome to attend this solemn and beautiful service, which includes foot washing, and the stripping of the altar.
Good Friday, April 14, 12:00-3:00 pm: Ecumenical service on the Seven Last Words of Christ, St. John’s Episcopal Church (across the street from FUMC). You can come and go as you like throughout the service. Pastor Matthias will preach on the fifth word, “I thirst” (John 19:28).
Good Friday Service at FUMC at 7:00 pm, on the Labyrinth: Dr. Celene Lillie will lead this participatory, spiritual service based on The Thunder, Perfect Mind (a Fourth Century Christian text discovered in 1945 that has powerful implications for Holy Week and beyond) on our beautiful Labyrinth. There will be time to walk the labyrinth for all who wish to do so. All are welcome!
Easter Sunday, April 16
8:30–10:00 am Easter Breakfast served by our youth in the church parlor. There will be plenty of yummy food to satisfy all pallets: vegetarian, gluten-free, and meat lovers alike. Your voluntary donations (no donation is too small!) support future youth mission trips. All are welcome!
10:30 am Festival Easter Worship Service in the sanctuary with special music featuring brass, timpani, our Chancel Choir, and organ, all led by Dr. Gerald Holbrook, Director of Music. Pastor Matthias Krier’s message will be “Why Are You Weeping?” based on John 18:1-20.
