Join Us for Welcome Home Sunday 9/11
September 11, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 1:30 pm
Each September at First United Methodist Church of Boulder, we welcome everyone back from summer breaks and travels, and regroup to look toward the next season in our church life together. This year, we do that on Sunday, September 11, Welcome Home Sunday.
Welcome Home Sunday is a special day. It is the first day of Sunday School for our K-5th grade children, and Ellie Kanaar, our Director of Family Life Ministries, has a wonderful year planned for them. It is also our Chancel Choir’s first Sunday back in worship after their summer break. Our Director of Music, Gerald Holbrook, will be leading our Choir into a beautiful new year of music. In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn about many of the ministries and activities that are the lifeblood of First United Methodist Church of Boulder, and find out how you can get involved with work that speaks to your heart and utilizes your unique gifts and talents.
Before worship, our Theologians-in-Residence, Rev. Dr. Jann Aldredge-Clanton and Dr. Kendra Weddle Irons, will lead our Sunday Forum at 9:00 am in our church parlor. Dr. Weddle Irons will facilitate a Bible study on the Canaanite woman found in Matthew 15. Using circle conversations, she will help us see the Canaanite woman—indeed all marginalized persons in Scripture—have more to teach us than we have imagined. Interspersed throughout our conversation we will sing several of Rev. Dr. Aldredge-Clanton’s hymns that will challenge us to courageous action, much like the Canaanite woman in her day. Jann will provide biblical and historical background on the female divine images in the hymns. Through study and song, this will be an informative and inspirational experience! All are welcome.
During our 10:30 am worship service on Welcome Home Sunday, we’ll enjoy not only the choir’s music, but also some special hymns that were arranged by Jann, and she and Kendra will join us in worship on this morning. Rev. Pat Bruns will give the message, and will also lead a time of remembrance of the fifteenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
Welcome Home Sunday is the same day as Boulder Pridefest, so we’ll also acknowledge and celebrate this special day for our friends at Out Boulder, and for the Front Range LGBTQ community and their loved ones. All are encouraged to visit Pridefest in Boulder’s Central Park after worship.
And finally, we will EAT. Welcome Home Sunday concludes with a delicious potluck lunch. Bring something to share if you can, but come and eat regardless!
