Next Movie Matinee in the Church Library: Little Big Man on Sunday, 11/30

November 30, 2014 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Be a part of the matinee movie series in our comfy church library on the last Sunday of every month at 12:00 noon. Drinks will be provided; bring $5 to enjoy pizza during the movie.

Little Big ManThis month’s film is Little Big Man, a 1970 Western based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Berger. Although it is not about the Sand Creek Massacre, whose 150th anniversary we are commemorating this year, the film does take us to South Dakota and the Little Big Horn. The Finley family will lead a discussion about the movie after it concludes.

Little Big Man is a satirical comedy starring Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George, and Faye Dunaway. It tells the story of a white, male child raised by the Cheyenne Nation during the 19th century. The film contrasts the lives of the American pioneers and Native Americans, and is considered a revisionist Western for its sympathetic treatment of Native Americans and its depiction of the United States Calvary as villains. Despite its satirical approach, the film has tragic elements and a clear social conscience about prejudice and injustice. Little Big Man is considered an example of anti-establishment films of the period, protesting America’s involvement in the Vietnam War by portraying the U.S. military negatively.

One of the questions we will be considering in our discussion after the film is what 1970s stereotypes of Native Americans we noticed as we were watching. No doubt other interesting questions and points of conversation will emerge as well. Please join us!

Mark your calendars now for the December movie matinee on Sunday, December 28th; more details are coming soon.
