Our Journey through Lent: “Staying in Love With God”

Lent.heartLent, the 40-day period leading up to Easter, has a reputation for being somber and austere; indeed, beginning in the dark of winter it does seem to draw us toward serious reflection. But Lent can be a time of clarity, restoration, and energetic affirmation, precisely some of the things one experiences when “in love.” Through traditional services, labyrinth walks, fasting, teaching and celebration, here are opportunities First Church offers this year to help all of us stay in love with God.

Ash Wednesday, February 18: Two opportunities to enter Lent – First in the morning at 9:30 am, a service of burning last year’s Palm Sunday branches to make the ashes, reminding us to treasure our days as we hear “from dust we came and from dust we shall return.” The evening service at 7:00 pm involves music, candlelight, ashes and the opportunity to walk the labyrinth.

Fasting as A Spiritual Practice: Individual sundown-to-sundown fasting begins on three Monday evenings (February 23, March 9, and March 23), and those who wish to break the fast together join in Mead Hall at 6:00 pm on Tuesdays for a simple soup and bread supper. Tuesday suppers on February 24, March 10, and March 24.

Lenten Discussion Class on the Life-Transforming Presence of God: Discussion led by Keith Thompson with complementary on-line materials. Discussions in the conference room on Mondays from 6:30 – 8:00 on February 23, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30.

Spiritual Practices in Worship: Our Sunday worship services during Lent will offer spiritual methods and opportunities to experience God relating to prayer, singing and scripture not commonly used in our services. Sundays from 10:30 – 11:45 am on February 22, March 1, 15 & 22.

Spring Labyrinth Walk: Following the pattern of the earlier Solstice Walk on the Labyrinth, a moving event involving music, candlelight, words and silence will welcome the Spring Equinox. Saturday, March 21 at 4:00 pm.

ALL EVENTS ARE OPEN TO EVERYONE WISHING TO EXPERIENCE THE SACRED SEASON OF LENT IN A MINDFUL AND MEANINGFUL WAY.
