2021 Advent Devotional: In the Midst of Changing Ways – Many Gifts, One Spirit
Week 2: The Gift of Faith
Scripture: Philippians 3:9 – “Not having a righteousness of my own that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based in faith.”
Reflector: Lisa Carr
How has my faith shaped me, and how has it helped me through Changing Ways?
How has my faith shaped me? Deeply, but not gracefully, that’s for sure. I return
often to the image of a toddler scampering away from a parent at bath time or
bedtime. The parent is giving chase, trying to reach the little one who is not yet
ready to change direction. Luckily, God has continued to chase me even when I run
the other way.
God has shaped my faith beginning with the simple faith of a young child, trusting
that “God is great and God is good,” with me assuming the world is fair and just and
right. But the world has taught me that it is not fair, just, or right.
God has guided and grown my faith through the dismantling and re-shaping of my
many naïve and preferred illusions.
My faith has grown back into a simple faith; listening for and trusting the mystery of
the Holy Spirit’s invitation, movement, and grace. Simply trusting that love resides at
the heart of life, and trusting that love cannot be extinguished.
How has my faith helped me through changing ways? When things change, as they
do constantly, my faith grounds and orients me in the one unchanging true power –
the constant indestructible, unshakable, uncontaminated power of love. My faith
helps me embrace the newness inherent in each moment. My faith helps me discern
how I choose to respond and participate in this changing, unfolding mystery.
Prayer: God of mystery and indestructible love, thank you for entrusting your creation with life. May we trust our life in you. May your love diminish our fears and
grow our courage to trust the gifts of change. May we be ready to turn around and
scamper into your arms with full joy and delight. May we faith-fully see, reveal, and
offer the gift of your unshakeable love in a shaky-feeling world. Amen.
