Theologian-in-Residence Samantha Miller on Voices of Truth: Desert Saints

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Join our TIR (theologian-in-residence), Dr. Samantha Miller, for an exploration of the desert saints over three Sundays in June. Dr. Miller will lead our Forum (9:00 AM in the church parlor) on June 2, 9, and 16.

June 2: Meet the Desert Saints
An introduction to the men and women who went into the desert to live lives of intense spiritual formation in 4th century Egypt and Syria.

June 9: The Desert as Spiritual Environment
Explore what it is about the wilderness that draws people to deeper relationship with God and how the wilderness shapes people in habits of attention and indifference.

June 16: Desert Practices
Looking closely at the sayings and lives of the desert saints, we think about their particular spiritual practices, what those practices lead to, and how we might imitate these practices in our own lives.

Dr. Samantha Miller teaches church history and spiritual formation at Anderson University in Anderson, IN. Her research interests are in early Christian understandings of demons, virtue, moral responsibility, and salvation, and her personal interests include everything outdoors from canoeing to reading a good book under a tree. In addition to leading Forum, Dr. Miller will also preach in our 10:30 AM worship service on Sunday, June 16.
