Returning TIR (Theologian-in-Residence) Hal Taussig is coming back to First Church! Hal will be with us June 10 – June 26. He will lead Adult Education sessions on two Wednesday evenings, June 16 and 23, at 7:00 pm. He’ll also lead our Sacred Bites lunchtime Bible study on two Tuesdays, June 15 and 22, from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm.
The theme of Hal’s visit is “Mark and the Movies,” and he’ll center his programs around Mark 4:35-41, and Mark 5:21-43. He would also like you to try to see two movies: St. Frances (2020), directed by Alex Thompson, available on Amazon Prime Video and Vudu; and His House (2020), written-directed by Remi Weekes, available on Netflix. Hal will also be bringing copies of his book, Re-Reading the Gospel of Mark Amidst Loss and Trauma, co-authored with Maia Kotrosits. These books will be available for loan at the church office beginning June 10, and need to be returned before June 26. Please email the Church Office to arrange to borrow a book, or call us at 303-442-3770. You can also order the book through Amazon (paper copy, or for Kindle), or through your local bookseller.
A further note on reading the book: though the whole book is only 173 pages, Hal understands that folks may not have time for a cover-to-cover read, so he especially suggests focusing on pages 1-56; 77-112; and 155-174. No pages are required.
Hal’s sessions with our Tuesday lunchtime Bible study, Sacred Bites, will be via Zoom at 11:45 am on June 15 and 22. If you aren’t already on the Sacred Bites mailing list, and you’d like to join the Zoom, please email Rosalee Blake, Sacred Bites’ coordinator.
Hal’s first Wednesday night program on June 16 at 7:00 pm will be on Zoom; CLICK HERE to join the Zoom meeting. The meeting ID 819 8883 4431, and the passcode is 380242.
Hal’s second Wednesday night program (June 23 at 7:00 pm) will be a hybrid session with the opportunity for folks who feel safe doing so to gather with Hal in person a church; anyone not wishing to come to church can still join Hal on Zoom (same Zoom meeting link as the June 16 session…see above).
