Experiencing God as Love: Care of the Earth
Scripture: 1 John 4:19

“We love because he first loved us.”

This scripture brings back memories of catechism from my youth. This is one of those verses I can actually remember hearing, “We love because he first loved us.” Yet, even upon hearing it as a young lad, I could not comprehend it. It seemed beyond my understanding and experience. Even though I could not fully fathom this Divine Love, every Christmas was a reminder of this season of love. Folks in my community were a bit kinder, a bit more patient in their interactions with others. Even though I could not fully appreciate this Divine Love at the time, I was reminded Christmas after Christmas that this kind of love was possible.

Today, I understand (and have for decades) how this Divine Love can change the way in which we live and move and have our being. Furthermore, this Divine Love creates in me a desire to love, as the hymn suggests,

All things bright and beautiful
all creatures great and small
all things wise and wonderful
The Lord God made them all.

Prayer
Gracious and Loving Spirit, may your Divine Love create in us a desire to love all things great and small, thus becoming better stewards of this planet we call our home. This is possible because as someone once said, “Love is not something you have; love is something that has you.” May this Divine Love change the way in which we live, the way in which we move, and the way in which we have our being. Amen.
