Welcome to the 2020 Advent Devotional with daily reflections written by members and staff of First United Methodist Church. This year has been unprecedented and indeed, as the theme of our devotional suggests, we are Facing the Challenge of Change. Early on in the pandemic, there was discussion of doing a book of reflections on surviving the pandemic; little did we know or anticipate the length and devastating impact it would have. Then the summer brought a wave of protests, the likes of which had not been seen before, in response to the killing of George Floyd and other acts of violence. Our fragile earth has been beset by a record number of hurricanes and wildfires, the latter of which impacted some of our own members. So this year’s devotional focuses on these issues, and the reflections are based on personal experiences. We have tried to recruit a variety of voices, and have included some discussions with our youth.
Each day during the season of Advent (November 29 through Christmas Day), a new devotion will be posted here on the church’s website. Please join us as we journey through Advent together.
We thank all who shared. We also thank Jessica Harbeson, our Church Administrator, for her assistance and skill in posting this year’s devotional online.
We end the devotional with the theme of Peace, Love and Hope. May we celebrate this Christmas with hope in our hearts.
