Welcome to Week 2 of the 2020 Advent Devotional

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Welcome to the second week of the 2020 Advent Devotional with daily reflections written by members and staff of First United Methodist Church. This year has been unprecedented and indeed, as the theme of our devotional suggests, we are Facing the Challenge of Change. Early on in the pandemic, there was discussion of doing a book of reflections on surviving the pandemic; little did we know or anticipate the length and devastating impact it would have. Then the summer brought a wave of protests, the likes of which had not been seen before, in response to the killing of George Floyd and other acts of violence. Our fragile earth has been beset by a record number of hurricanes and wildfires, the latter of which impacted some of our own members. So this year’s devotional focuses on these issues, and the reflections are based on personal experiences. We have tried to recruit a variety of voices, and have included some discussions with our youth.

Thank you for making these devotions part of your Advent journey.

Week 2: December 6–12 – Liberty and Justice for All?

Scripture: Isaiah 40:1,4
Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.

Hymn: “Hope of the World”
Hope of the world…still let thy spirit unto us be given, to heal earth’s wounds and end all bitter strife.

Action: The vote did not end the strife, keep your voice strong.
