Mary Christmas

Dear Friends,

After worship on the 22nd I got a note from a friend.  She wrote: “I think we should start wishing people a Mary Christmas. ✨” When I responded “LOL,” she wrote back: “I’m serious! It has so much more depth and meaning than merry- a word we never use otherwise ever!”

Mary Christmas indeed.  The Magnificat is always one of the readings in Advent as it was this past Sunday.  Mary speaks a hopeful, excited word about the way God has ordered the world, by among other things, “lifting up the lowly.”

Mary is not speaking the angry word of a prophet.  Mary is not speaking the anguished cry of a prophet.  Mary is speaking a descriptive word about how she sees the world, and it is joyful, and she wants the world to see it the same way.

Mary Christmas indeed!

Keep tellin’ the Story,
