Being Grounded

Dear Friends,

These days, when it can seem like the ground is shaking underneath our feet every day, if not nearly every hour…it is good to be grounded. We hope, I hope, this is what church is for you – a place, a people, a worship experience which helps you feel the ground underneath your feet when you have been rocked back and forth by what you see on your screens, from your neighbors and family. I think of the people this past year who have been furloughed from their work, who have lost fellowship opportunities, who have lost jobs. This old world can be disconcerting.

A friend of mine lost her job a month ago. It was a total surprise; she was already reeling from the surprise death of her mother-in-law when the firing happened. Now what?

We who live in the shadows of the Rockies, though, know a little bit of what it is to stand on solid ground. We lift up our eyes to the hills. What did my friend did? She got on the phone with her friends. Many of us had come to know her through church, or through her work with a large not-for-profit (that brought her into contact with lots of folks), or simply through friendship. She reached out for words of comfort, and challenge, and ideas/thoughts.

I don’t know what her next step will be, but I know her next step is not alone. And she knows it, too.

For those of you feeling unsteady – feel the ground beneath your feet. It’s right here. All around.

Keep tellin’ the Story,
